ASPE Denver Chapter Technical Meeting Presentation

November 20th, 2019

11:30am to 1:00pm

Compressed Air System Design

On November 20th, 2019 Greg Ashe, Key Account Manager from Kaeser Compressors will present Compressed Air System Design to the ASPE Denver Chapter.  Compressed air is often called the fourth utility because it is vital to industrial manufacturing processes.  Although plants cannot function without it, compressed air is an inherently inefficient form of energy. Without careful planning, it can dramatically increase power consumption and cause poor air quality, greatly impacting the bottom line.  Presentation topics will include: compressor types, proper equipment selection, systems layouts, compressed air treatment, and energy efficiency.  Greg will provide analysis of operational vs capital expenses of air compressors and reducing air consumption to minimize power usage.  Rotary Screw compressor features will be reviewed including oil free vs oil flooded rotary screw, and the risk mitigation with oil free design.  Mr. Ashe will provide compressor sizing including issues from oversizing, calculating required PSI, CFM and air treatment.  Redundancy and diversity issues will presented to provide a compressed air system that will meet project requirements.  Greg will discuss applications where VFDs should be utilized and where they should not, as well as discuss sizing with VFDs.  A system layout will be reviewed including pipe sizing, tank sizing, tank locations and pipe material.  Difference in air treatment will be detailed including refrigerated vs desiccant dryers, dryer correction factors and ISO 8573 requirements.  This presentation should not be missed if you are involved in compressed air system design, specification and coordination.

Currently working fulltime to provide compressed air education to various groups, Greg Ashe brings passion, honed communication skills, and many years of experience providing onsite compressed air assessments.  Greg works for Kaeser Compressors as a lead trainer for the Kaeser Factory Certified Training Program, teaching industry best practices on energy efficiency and compressed air system design.  When not teaching internal courses, he travels throughout the country providing design assistance and technical seminars to engineers from all industries who are involved with compressed air.

The November 20th meeting will be at the Wellshire Event Center, 3333 S. Colorado Blvd, Denver at 11:30am to 1pm.  The cost for the meeting will be $30.00 and can be prepaid at the ASPE Denver Chapter website or reservations to pay cash or check at the door via email to Bradley Gettel.  Parking is free to attendees.  Additional parking is south of the events center, take the south entrance into the Wellshire Golf Course from Colorado Blvd.
